WAM-Vs in Action

You’ll find our ASVs “making waves” in commercial, defense, and scientific applications.

Defense and Maritime Security

Unmanned Swarm Operation

The WAM-V Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) were tasked in a demonstration to help protect U.S. Naval ships. Watch how the WAM-Vs intercept the intruder-vessel and escort it out of the protected area. OPT was proud to participate with Ligado Networks and Apium to illuminate how unmanned technology can protect high-value assets.

Robots to the Rescue: Combatting IUU Fishing

In October 2020, OPT, along with our technology partner Overwatch Aero, conducted a live demonstration for NOAA, USCG, the US Navy, and industry observers in the Dana Point Marine Conservation Area. The demonstration was part of the MPAbots program focused on new technologies for combating IUU (Illegal, Unreported, Unregulated) fishing. Unmanned technologies, both on the ocean surface and in the air, can vastly improve maritime law enforcement, conservation, and search and rescue efforts by providing government authorities with secure, actionable intelligence.

Multi-Domain WAM-V UMS: UAV L&R

WAM-V ASVs are ideal platforms for multi-domain (air, sea, and subsea) UMS (unmanned maritime systems).

In this video, a Planck Aerosystems Shearwater UAV autonomously launches, tracks, and lands on a WAM-V 16 ASV at a port security demo at NAVBASE San Diego.

Multi-Domain WAM-V UMS: ROV Mission

WAM-V ASVs are ideal platforms for multi-domain (air, sea, and subsea) UMS (unmanned maritime systems).

In this video, a WAM-V 16 ASV launches and recovers a Seabotix vLBV ROV during a port security demonstration at NAVBASE San Diego.

Marine Surveys

Collaborative Autonomy

Two WAM-V 16 ASVs teamed up with a crewed survey vessel to survey Lake Michigan-Huron on a NOAA hydrographic survey project. The two WAM-V 16 ASVs autonomously followed the crewed survey vessel to provide 3x sonar coverage with the same personnel. Lateral and direction of travel offsets can be adjusted in real-time to ensure proper bottom coverage is achieved.

Project S.A.F.E. (Surveying Autonomously in Flooding Environments)

OPT, DoC Mapping, Norbit, and Chesapeake Technology teamed up to demonstrate an unmanned survey solution necessary for pipeline surveys during critical flood events. A WAM-V ASV was outfitted with a Norbit multibeam sonar and SonarWiz software. The combination of technologies offers the only viable option to successfully complete these types of surveys in a cost-effective and timely manner. This demonstration was for Pipeline Research Council International.
